ecosVC silver sponsor of NORM

Did you catch ecosVC at the 72nd Annual Northwest Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society (Innovation & Unanticipated Discoveries) in Corvallis, Oregon?

As silver sponsors of the meeting, ecosVC was proud to support this regional conference of the American Chemical Society and to work with Oregon State University partners who are strong supporters of science and innovation.

American Chemical Society (ACS) Northwest Region Partners for Progress and Prosperity Award (P3)

“For the successful partnership between ecosVC, CSMC, and OSU NRT-IGE to support entrepreneurship, innovation and career advancement in the chemical enterprise.” ACS recognizes the awardees for introduction and expansion of the Lens of the Market® (LoM) program at Oregon State University. LoM uniquely advances innovation education and commercialization work by informing students and faculty how to translate basic research to address real market needs. LoM represents a unique and progressive training paradigm that helps participants realize both the full scientific and societal value of their work.

  • Judy Giordan, ecosVC, Inc. and OSU Professor of Practice
  • Douglas Keszler, OSU Center for Sustainable Materials Chemistry (CSMC), NSF Center for Chemical Innovation, OSU Distinguished Professor
  • Rich Carter, OSU NRT-IGE, OSU Professor

Judith and Janet present at ACS Women's Retreat

The American Chemical Society Pacific Northwest Women in Science Retreat (held July 8–10 in Camp Magruder, Rockaway Beach, Oregon) brought together women at all stages of their scientific careers, both from academia and industry. This opportunity to share advice, teach skills and learn is just one of the many ways that women can change each others' lives.

Judith and Janet took part in the Alternative Careers Panel, which included speakers Judith Giordan, Bettye Maddux, Annette Kolodzie, Sarah Brady, Jessica Marshall, and Janet Bryant.

Judith also hosted the workshop "Go ahead—Be proud! The Art of Bragging and Being Heard."

How much is too much? How much is enough? Ever wonder what to say to convince people why you should be selected to do something or lead something, or be accepted or promoted? Ever wonder when what you say is bragging and when it is simply being proud and sharing facts? Join us to learn some tricks and PRACTICE in this bragging workshop led by Judy Giordan, PhD and Janet Bryant, MBA. Check out this article for more information, and learn more about the sponsor of this workshop, ecosVC.

Judith and Janet present at CUWIP

A successful physics career is not only about doing great science – it is also about convincing others why our work is important, and why we are the ones capable of doing it. Yet sharing our abilities is thought of as bragging by some, and it doesn’t come easily or naturally to everyone. Some even think it’s better to be modest about our accomplishments, and to “let the work speak for itself”, or to let others brag about us. We say, “NO! We should be able to confidently and unselfconsciously say what we are good at and provide evidence for it.”

Judith and Janet recently attended the American Physics Society's Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP) at Oregon State University.

For the last decade, CUWiP has worked to help undergraduate women thrive in physics by providing them a unique opportunity to engage with and learn from other women in physics at all stages of their physics careers.

Commercializing science and technology is NOT the same as it used to be…and neither are the players nor the rules. Always a contact sport – played primarily by those trained in the art and well equipped by the biggest and “best” companies - technology commercialization based on research from universities ranging from materials and chemicals to biomass and energy is an ever growing player in the game.

And it doesn’t stop there – government labs also have the mandate to commercialize and with all of this rule changing and corporate downsizing - companies are extolling the value and importance of Open Innovation, and former employees are creating ventures!

In this shifting landscape, where EVERYONE can play, what does it take to play well and very successfully?

Judith Giordan answered these questions and shared her insights on the new rules of the game in The Convergence of University Research, Technology Commercialization & Career Development: A New 21st Century Contact Sport
