Alicyn M. Rhoades, PhD

Alicyn is an Assistant Professor of Plastics Engineering Technology at Penn State University, Behrend College. She uses her knowledge of technology development and commercialization to deliver Lens of the Market training.

In graduate school, she was a National Science Foundation IGERT Fellow and developed antimicrobial polymer coating additives in collaboration with the Medicinal Chemistry Department of the University of Mississippi.  Before joining Penn State Erie as an Assistant Professor in 2012, she spent five years in professional positions of increasing responsibility, most recently with Bayer MaterialScience, LLC in Pittsburgh, PA.  As Innovation Manager at Bayer Material Science she was responsible for identifying and developing high-potential biobased chemistry collaborations in North America.  She was also a Bayer delegate for the Industrial Research Institute from 2010-2012, where she was a member of the National Meeting Program Committee.  She was also chosen as a Fortune 500 W.O.M.E.N. in America mentee from 2010-2012.   

Dr. Rhoades’ academic research interests include biobased and composite polymer blend systems, processing-induced polymer morphology, spectroscopy, and biomimetic polymer systems.  She is a member of The American Chemical Society, The Society of Plastics Engineers, and American Society for Engineering Education
